Tax File Number
Also referred to as TFN.
A TFN is a unique number that is issued to individuals and organisations to help the Australian Taxation Office administer tax and other Australian Government systems.
The Australian Taxation Office only issue one TFN to you during your lifetime, even if you change your circumstances such as your name or residency. You should keep your TFN secure at all times and advise the Australian Government if you change your name or address so your details can be updated.
Applying for a Tax File Number
Do this before you start looking for work. To receive an income in Australia, you need a Tax File Number (TFN). Income includes wages or salary from a job, payments from the government, and money earned from investments including interest on savings accounts.
In Australia, you can telephone the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and have a TFN application form sent to you. Alternatively, you can apply for a TFN over the internet.
The ATO can be contacted on 13 28 61, at their various shop fronts, or through their website at http://www.ato.gov.au.
