Transportation

Australia has a world-class public transport system, with large areas of each main city accessible via train, bus, tram or "cat". Discounts are available to students and pensioners. Maps and guides to such services are available at information booths, transport locations and via phone or internet.

If you wish to drive in Australia, please be aware we drive on the left side of the road. That amongst other road rules can be found at the national transport commission website at http://www.ntc.gov.au.

As a general rule, you are able to drive in Australia, as a visitor, on your existing driving licence for a maximum of three months after arriving in Australia. Information is provided at http://www.immi.gov.au for those intending to gain a permanent driving licence in Australia.

If you intend to further travel once arriving in Australia, and don't already have one it is strongly recommended you purchase an International Driving Permit (IDP). This is a special permit established for travellers, which allows motorists to drive in overseas countries without testing as long as their driver's licence is valid. Another benefit of an IDP is that it is authorised by the United Nations and is recognised in over 150 countries world-wide. An IDP can also be used as an additional form of identification whilst travelling. A large portion of car rental firms will also require an IDP before an agreement is reached. Applications for an IDP should be available from your local Post Office.

Interstate/International Transport

Travel within Australia is possible via various linked highways around the country, using car or bus transportation. Most main centres are linked via interstate rail as well. All state capitals are linked via air travel, with most regional areas covered also.
